After School - United/PS 305
After-School Nature and Gardening at 305/A&L United - OUTDOORS THURSDAYS!
Registration now open.
Registration now open.
United kids will discover nature and gardening in the school garden and in the neighborhood! They will plant and harvest organic food, learn about neighborhood trees, learn to make plant-based sprays, learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants and explore the coolest trees, animals, plants, and fungi in the neighborhood, including the Hattie Carthan garden (adjacent to the school playground). When weather permits, we will walk to, learn about, and work on neighborhood trees, community gardens and neighborhood green spaces including Von King Park. Kids will get really dirty and they will love it!
We intend to be outdoors as much and as often as possible, including hot, cold, windy, snowy and drizzly weather. So kids need to dress appropriately, including rain coats, rain boots, sneakers (no sandals), sun hats. During inclement weather (thunderstorms, heavy snowstorms, dangerous ice), we will be gardening indoors in a United classroom. In order to maintain an economically diverse group of gardeners, we have worked out a tiered pricing structure. Once everyone pays what they can, we can figure out how many spots can open up to families who need financial support. No explanation is needed if you can't afford the class. Please pack sunscreen!

EQUITY:
Equity requires effort. We cannot afford to give gardening scholarships without your help. Here’s how you can help:
Cost to pay for your child (Monarchs) and support another: $700
Cost for your child AND another child in Monarch class to attend free: $960
Scholarship $0-$480 cost per child for families who need extra support. No explanation needed.
In last year's program, more than 25% of our gardeners paid nothing. Thank you to the incredibly generous families who made this possible.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
* On days when there is dangerous weather (hurricane, tornado, dangerously high winds, blizzard) and schools are still open, we MAY switch to remote, but it’s very unlikely we will go remote at this point. If this does happen, supplies will be delivered to prepare for this possibility. This will include plants, soil, jars and possibly insects. But only cute insects. If we are already outdoors when this weather surprises us, we may go to the picnic house or the public library at GAP and bring nature art kits for kids until pickup.
*Rain is NOT dangerous. We nature even when there is pouring rain. Kids MUST have long raincoats and rain boots. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the importance of clean water for plant and animal life. We may ask you to pick up your child if they are not dressed for this weather.
