Fall
Kids will discover rare plants and amazing animals in Prospect Park! We will visit some of the most beautiful places in Prospect Park while learning about the native animals and plants that need the last remaining forest in Brooklyn to survive. We eat delicious edible weeds (optional) while learning about native tree hoppers, raccoons, opossums, kestrels, frogs, turtles and jumping spiders. This is a rain or shine or snow class! Rain coats and boots are a must! All materials included in price: binoculars, microscopes, magnifying glasses, and nature art kit.
Winter
Kids will learn about nature and survival skills! What do you do if you're on a nature walk and you get lost? Kids will learn to start a fire, whittle, use a compass, make shelters, send signals, make tools, identify trees and find food (no animals) while exploring the last remaining forest in Brooklyn. Kids will learn about edible winter berries and poisonous lookalikes. If there's heavy snow, we will use sleds to explore different areas of the park. On insanely cold days, we have hot chocolate and/or hot apple cider while we explore. We will use monoculars and binoculars to bird watch and explore while learning about some of the oldest trees and how they've been used for millennia by Native Americans for food, shelter and beauty. If we have time, and weather permits, we will walk to and learn about some of our other local green treasures, like the Gowanus Canal, nearby community gardens and local trees. This class requires snowsuits, hats, gloves, good boots, a balaclava, a sturdy backpack for all supplies and hand warmers EVERY single class. This class is NOT for children who don't like cold weather. But we will be moving around and moving fast! If anything, they will probably sweat! Brooklyn Seeds will provide the following gear: headlamps, monoculars, magnifying glasses, a sled, a compass, a rope, binoculars and a kid-friendly multi-tool.
Spring
Spring into Nature and explore the treasures of Prospect Park! Kids will hike to and learn about Duck Island, Binnen Waterfalls, Juneteenth Way and the hidden Quaker cemetery! We hike to a different location in the park every week and explore the trails less traveled to the Peninsula, the hidden trails of the Ravine, visit every waterfall and learn about the history of the Wellhouse.
We also ask: How many wood ducks can a wood duck have? We search for and count her ducklings! One wood duck had 18 ducklings two years ago and 14 the previous year! We look for rocks where dragonflies climb out to take their first flight after spending years in water! Can we get a Junco to eat cracked corn out of our hands? And we try to answer the age-old question: Are squirrels smarter than chipmunks? We don’t always know what we’ll find, but every week is an exploration of the park’s mysterious places, animals, fungi and plants.
Summer
We learn that invasive plants make great snacks, and jumping worms definitely don’t. Kids look for and learn about the American Bullfrog, jumping spiders, crazy caterpillars, delicious weeds, VERY territorial birds and the most majestic trees on the East Coast. Kids will also plant and bring home air-cleaning plants. We explore the amazing life in Prospect Park! We learn how to find and identify rocks and minerals and we go metal detecting!!
Which birds summer in Prospect Park? We use monoculars and binoculars to find their nests! We explore the best birding sites in the park while learning about the native plants these birds need to survive. We learn to identify edible weeds while hiking the park! This program includes fun nature art projects and games in the park!
