After School Outdoors!
Nature and Gardening in Prospect Park!
We pick kids up from schools and bus stops and accept park drop-offs!
Fall 2o24 Registration is opening soon!
Kids learn about Native American crows, oak trees and their acorn weevils, honey locust trees and their locust weevils, and the important plants often mistaken for weeds - snakeroot, pokeweed, and milkweed! We explore the flora and fauna in the park, adopt and care for our beautiful local trees and identify edible weeds. They’re everywhere!!
We take beautiful nature walks- even on really cold and rainy and snowy days. Please, please dress kids accordingly for their own safety and comfort!!!! Sandals are NOT ok! Rain and snow boots are a must on rainy and snowy days. When there is dangerous weather (thunderstorms, heavy ice storms) we will go to the public library and bring nature indoors by planting South African jade plants and learn about the power of plants by making our own plant-based essential oil sprays.
We have maintained a scholarship fund for almost 25% of gardening students at Brooklyn Seeds. We can only do that if you give! No explanation is needed if you can't afford the class. All you have to do is choose the scholarship option on the registration form below.

WHO WE ARE:
We pay our staff a THRIVING wage (25% higher than a living wage), include generous scholarships and hire from the communities we work in. We strive to be economically, racially and LGBTQI diverse. When you sign your child up for our Brooklyn Seeds nature program, you are supporting a community. We do all this while using compassionate communication teaching tools and incorporate social-emotional learning. Please also consider giving to our GoFundMe campaign, where you can learn more about what we do and why we do it.
GRADES: K - 5.
Older kids can work together independently and will have more challenging activities. In order to make sure younger kids do not feel left out or overwhelmed, we recommend kindergarteners sign up with a buddy. Or we can have a quick introduction on Zoom to allow your child to meet us before the first pick-up. We will keep classroom buddies, siblings and similar age groups together. Parents and babysitters also have the option of dropping children off at the park, including pod drop-offs.
WHERE
We walk kids to Prospect Park and explore beautiful spots together. If picking up from a farther school, we either take public transportation with your child or we use our Brooklyn Seeds cargo bike. Dismissal is at Prospect Park West and Garfield Place at 5:30. If it’s easier, and you communicate with us the previous day, can walk your child to Grand Army Plaza for dismissal.
TRUST
We practice compassionate communication and incorporate social-emotional learning into fun nature classes. We find fun and gentle ways to communicate to kids about nature while giving them time and space to express their needs, whether it’s frustration about something that happened during the school day or sharing a meaningful experience with the group.
SCHOLARSHIPS. TAKE WHAT YOU NEED. GIVE WHAT YOU CAN.
We believe in economic, racial and LGBTQ diversity. We offer scholarships on the registration form! We don’t talk about equity. We practice it. We ask that you give what you can, when you can. And take what you need when you need it. Unemployed or underemployed parents: $0-$1450, but please apply with an explanatory email so we can determine which families we can help. Details on the registration form. The form also allows you to give what you can to help cover the cost for a family that can’t afford it.
