Fall Nature and Gardening in Prospect Park!
We pick kids up from school!
Registration opens August 3.
Kids will discover rare plants and amazing animals in Prospect Park! We will visit some of the most beautiful places in Prospect Park while learning about the native animals and plants that need the last remaining forest in Brooklyn to survive. We eat delicious edible weeds (optional) while learning about native tree hoppers, raccoons, opossums, kestrels, frogs, turtles and jumping spiders. This is a rain or shine or snow class! Rain coats and boots are a must! All materials included in price: binoculars, microscopes, magnifying glasses, and nature art kit.
GRADES: K - 5.
Older kids can work together independently and will have more challenging activities. In order to make sure younger kids do not feel left out or overwhelmed, we recommend kindergarteners sign up with a buddy. Or we can have a quick introduction on Zoom to allow your child to meet us before the first pick-up. We will keep classroom buddies, siblings and similar age groups together. Parents and babysitters also have the option of dropping children off at the park, including pod drop-offs.

If it’s easier, we can walk your child to Grand Army Plaza for dismissal. Please read through, and registration and payment methods are below.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
We follow relevant COVID protocols and have fun outdoors safely.
NO HANGRY KIDS
Please pack a full water bottle and 2 snacks because they sometimes eat them during lunch.
WHAT TO WEAR
All kids must wear comfortable shoes which allow them to run, hop, climb, skip and moonwalk. NO SANDALS. No fancy outfits because they will absolutely destroy them when they jump into that mud or rain puddle. Please dress for easy and comfortable outdoor movement and expect kids to get VERY dirty. We will sometimes be running or walking long distances as we learn about the last forest in Brooklyn, while incorporating social-emotional learning.
TRUST
We practice compassionate communication and incorporate social-emotional learning into fun nature classes. We find fun and gentle ways to communicate to kids about nature while giving them time and space to express their needs, whether it’s frustration about something that happened during the school day or sharing a meaningful experience with the group.
NO CLASSES
We do NOT have classes on half days and when public schools are closed. This includes school holidays, snow days, etc...
WHO WE ARE
We pay our staff a THRIVING wage (25% higher than a living wage), include generous scholarships and hire from the communities we work in. We strive to be economically, racially and LGBTQ diverse. When you sign your child up for our Brooklyn Seeds nature program, you are supporting a community.
SCHOLARSHIPS. TAKE WHAT YOU NEED. GIVE WHAT YOU CAN.
We believe in economic, racial and LGBTQ diversity. We offer scholarships on the registration form! We don’t talk about equity. We practice it. We ask that you give what you can, when you can. And take what you need when you need it. Unemployed or underemployed parents: $0-$1450. Details on the registration form. The form also allows you to give what you can to help cover the cost for a family that can’t afford it.
IMPORTANT DETAILS:
* On days when there is dangerous weather (hurricane, tornado, dangerously high winds, blizzard) and schools are still open, we MAY switch to remote, but it’s very unlikely we will go remote at this point. If this does happen, supplies will be delivered to prepare for this possibility. This will include plants, soil, jars and possibly insects. But only cute insects. If we are already outdoors when this weather surprises us, we may go to the picnic house or the public library at GAP and bring nature art kits for kids until pickup.
*Rain is NOT dangerous. We nature even when there is pouring rain. Kids MUST have long raincoats and rain boots. It’s a great opportunity to learn about the importance of clean water for plant and animal life. We may ask you to pick up your child if they are not dressed for this weather.
