Winter Nature and Survival classes in Prospect Park
January - March 2023
REGISTRATION OPENS DECEMBER 1st.
We pick kids up from PS 118 and walk them to Prospect Park, where they learn about nature and survival skills! What do you do if you're on a nature walk and you get lost? Kids will learn to start a fire, whittle, use a compass, make shelters, send signals, make tools, identify trees and find food (no animals) while exploring the last remaining forest in Brooklyn. Kids will learn about edible winter berries and poisonous lookalikes. If there's heavy snow, we will use sleds to explore different areas of the park. On insanely cold days, we have hot chocolate and/or hot apple cider while we explore. We will use monoculars and binoculars to bird watch and explore while learning about some of the oldest trees and how they've been used for millennia by Native Americans for food, shelter and beauty. If we have time, and weather permits, we will walk to and learn about some of our other local green treasures, like the Gowanus Canal, nearby community gardens and local trees. This class requires snowsuits, hats, gloves, good boots, a balaclava, a sturdy backpack for all supplies and hand warmers EVERY single class. This class is NOT for children who don't like cold weather. But we will be moving around and moving fast! If anything, they will probably sweat! Brooklyn Seeds will provide the following gear: headlamps, monoculars, magnifying glasses, a sled, a compass, a rope, binoculars and a kid-friendly multi-tool.
NOTE: We do NOT cancel this class unless there is DANGEROUS weather. Rain and snow are not dangerous. A blizzard or ice storm or an alien invasion is dangerous. Unless they're super friendly aliens.

Older kids can work together independently and will have more challenging activities. In order to make sure younger kids do not feel left out or overwhelmed, we recommend kindergarteners sign up with a buddy. Or we can have a quick introduction on Zoom to allow your child to meet us before the first pick-up. We will keep classroom buddies, siblings and similar age groups together. Parents and babysitters also have the option of dropping children off at the park, including pod drop-offs.
TRANSPORTATION:
We pick kids up from schools (PS 321, PS 133, PS 9, PS 282, PS 118, PS 39, St. Ann's, Brooklyn Prospect Charter School). We also pick kids up from school bus stops and walk them to Prospect Park. Parents also have the option of dropping kids off to Prospect Park. Dismissal is at Prospect Park at 5:30pm, usually at the corner of Garfield Place and PPW. When there is heavy rain, dismissal may be at Grand Army Plaza.
REGISTRATION OPENS DECEMBER 1ST.
Please click on the registration link below. But please read important information below before clicking. If you have any questions about the program, email [email protected]. If you would like to drop your child off at the park rather than have the school pick-up option, please click on the Prospect Park link on our after-school page.
NO HANGRY KIDS!
Please pack a healthy snack or two or three because they often eat most of their snacks during lunch! Please pack a FULL water bottle. We do take kids to the bathroom and have them fill their water bottles before we walk to the park, but we want to get to the park as quickly as possible.
WHAT TO WEAR!
On cold days, snow pants are essential, even when there is no snow, because they keep kids super warm and dry! We NEVER hear kids complain about the cold when they wear snow pants! It's the best investment! Also, a warm hat or balaclava, gloves, snow boots. NO SANDALS. No fancy outfits or sparkly or white shoes or they will destroy them when they jump into mud puddles. Bogs are by far the warmest boots (if you do get them, make sure you get the ones made for warmth down to -30°F.). If your kids are NOT wearing snow plants, please make sure they have two layers on, including long underwear. It contributes to having warm and happy children traipsing around in the park! Please dress for easy and comfortable movement. We will often be running or walking long distances as we learn about fun survival skills in the park.
DANGEROUS WEATHER!
* On days when there is a blizzard, an ice storm, a thunderstorm, or dangerous weather, we will cancel classes. Kids are then welcome to schedule a make-up any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday until June 2023.
SAFETY!
We have fun outdoors while following relevant COVID protocols. Kids will be partnered up with kids with similar interests and/or same age groups and skill levels. For younger kids (Kindergarten) if possible, we suggest signing up with a buddy or buddies. We have friends and siblings work together whenever possible, but we also switch partners weekly so kids can get to know each other.
SCHOOL CLOSURES!
We do NOT have classes when public schools are closed. This includes school holidays, snow days, half days, etc... Classes will be canceled if we do not reach a minimum of 8 kids.
