After School - United/PS 305
After-school Nature and Gardening at 305/A&L United - OUTDOORS!
United kids will discover nature and gardening in the neighborhood! They will plant and harvest organic food in the United school garden, learn about neighborhood trees, learn to make plant-based sprays, learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants, grow and bring home delicious greens and explore the coolest trees, animals, plants, and fungi in the neighborhood, including the Hattie Carthan garden (adjacent to the school playground). When weather permits, we will walk to, learn about, and work on neighborhood trees, community gardens and neighborhood green spaces. Kids will get really really dirty and sometimes cold but they will love it!
We intend to be outdoors as much and as often as possible, including hot, cold, windy, snowy and drizzly weather. So kids need to dress appropriately, including rain coats, rain boots, snow boots, sneakers (no sandals), hats, etc... During inclement weather (thunderstorms, heavy snowstorms, dangerous ice, Dalek attacks), we will be gardening indoors in a United classroom. In order to maintain an economically diverse group of gardeners, we have worked out a tiered pricing structure. Once everyone pays what they can, we can figure out how many spots can open up to families who need financial support. No explanation is needed if you can't afford the class. All children are required to wear face masks. Hand sanitizer will be provided. All tools will be disinfected between classes.
We offer two gardening classes, one at 2:40pm-4:00pm and one at 4:05pm- 5:20pm. We also offer a yoga/movement/homework help/choice time during both hours so your child can go straight from yoga/homework to gardening (or the other way around) and you can pick up at 5:20pm. If schools close due to COVID, all classes will resume in Von King Park, but homework help will not be an option. It will all be nature in the park 2:40pm - 5:20pm!
