After-school Nature and Gardening at 305/A&L United - OUTDOORS!
WINTER REGISTRATION OPENS DECEMBER 7.
United kids discover nature and gardening in the neighborhood! What can you grow in the cold? So much! We learn about animal hibernation, tree communication (they talk to each other!) and mushrooms that like cold weather! Kids will plant and harvest organic food in the United school garden - even in the cold! They learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants such as neglected neighborhood trees and the plants in the Hattie Carthan garden. When it’s really freezing or there is inclement weather, we will garden indoors. But we will be outdoors as much and as often as possible! Kids will get really really dirty and sometimes cold but they will love it!
Kids need to dress appropriately, including snow pants, snow boots or sneakers (no sandals), hats, mittens, etc... In order to maintain an economically diverse group of gardeners, scholarships are available. We pick up and drop off from LEAP if you are already registered with LEAP.
DATES: Nature and Gardening - 12 Thursdays:
January 6, 13, 20, 27, February 3, 10, 17, March 3, 10, 17, 24, 31
OPTION A: 2:40-4pm nature and gardening class $350
OPTION B: 4:05 - 5:20pm nature and gardening class $350
OPTION C: 2:40 - 5:20pm (both nature/gardening & choice time/movement) $700
Scholarship $0-$330 cost per child for families who need extra love. No explanation needed.
BAD WEATHER and/or COVID closing:
*** If there is pouring rain and/or dangerous weather, we will garden indoors in a United classroom. If schools close due to COVID, and weather allows, we will nature in Von King Park (after negative COVID test). On days when there is a perfect storm of bad weather and COVID closing, we will go remote and garden on Zoom. Supplies will be sent home to prepare for this possibility.
COVID PROTOCOLS:
All children are required to wear face masks. Each class will have a maximum of 22 kids who will be split up into small groups. Already existing pods/comfort levels will be taken into consideration when determining the groups.
Dismissal: United garden entrance unless otherwise indicated due to bad weather or COVID closing.
EQUITY:
We cannot afford to give gardening scholarships without your help. Here’s how you can help:
Cost to pay for your child and support another family that’s struggling to pay: $500
Cost for your child AND pay for another child to garden free of charge: $1200.
Equity requires effort. In the fall gardening program, more than 25% of our gardeners paid nothing. Thank you to the incredibly generous families who made this possible.
Registration Options for United students:
United students have two after-school nature and gardening choices: the gardening program in the school garden on Thursdays, or the Prospect Park nature option on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. To choose the Prospect Park option where we pick students up from the bus or kids are dropped off in the park, please click here - Prospect Park Option
The registration link below is ONLY for Thursdays at United.
