Winter Nature & Gardening @ United/PS 305!
After-school Nature and Gardening at 305/A&L United - OUTDOORS THURSDAYS!
United kids will discover nature and gardening in the school garden and in the neighborhood! They will plant and harvest organic food, learn about neighborhood trees and all the animals that need them! Kids will also learn to recognize and help native and endangered plants and explore the coolest trees, animals, plants, and fungi in the neighborhood, including the Hattie Carthan garden (adjacent to the school playground). Have you seen the downy woodpeckers and crows in the neighborhood? When it’s really freezing or there is dangerous weather, we will garden indoors in a United classroom. Kids love making plant-based sprays and growing their own mushrooms on cold winter days! But we will be outdoors as much and as often as possible! Kids will get really really dirty and sometimes cold but they will love it! When construction starts in the garden, we will explore and learn at the Hattie Carthan garden and Von King Park, and then walk back to school. Kids will get really dirty and they will love it!
We intend to be outdoors as much and as often as possible, including cold, windy, snowy and drizzly days. Two words: SNOW PANTS! Even when it's not snowing, snow pants do a GREAT job of keeping kids warm! Rules: multiple layers (if kids are not wearing snow pants over their pants, they should definitely wear long johns), snow boots, sneakers (unless it's snowing), balaclavas or hats that cover ears, mittens, and scarves. When there is inclement weather (thunderstorms, heavy snowstorms, dangerous ice), we will be gardening indoors in a United classroom. In order to maintain an economically diverse group of gardeners, we ask that you give what you can. We have maintained a scholarship fund for almost 25% of students at United. We can only do that if you give! No explanation is needed if you can't afford the class. All you have to do is choose the scholarship option on the website.
